In my experience in IT field there are generally two types of people, one who are open to new experiences and learning and other ones are the people who are skeptical about almost everything, these are “know it all” guys.
In the book “How Google Works” the author Eric Schmidt described these people as Hippos, they destroy the people in front of them with their experience rather than merit and it is really difficult to convince them for any idea.
These Hippos are everywhere in hierarchy model of a corporate, and this is the reason why there are revolutionary things happening in startups rather than in big corporate offices.
Being reasonable and being skeptical are two different things, people who are skeptical stick to their point of view not matter what, and people who are reasonable would might change their perspective after the discussion.
We should always be open to new learning and possibilities, because learning can come from anywhere irrespective of experience and hierarchy. I have learnt so many things from my juniors and it has truly changed my life.

Faisal, I think there needs to be a proper balance of engineers that are the more experienced guys which are often labeled “know-it-alls” and the more inexperienced guys which are willing to try things, which are often labeled “green behind the ears”. Engineers that are “green behind the ears” are very apt to drive a project into skipping steps in the process.
There are reasons we build models first, then the prototype and the go to manufacturing. Models are much cheaper than the real deal. In fact, mathematical models are much cheaper even than physical models. If an idea does not work mathematically on paper, it needs to be thrown out early and another idea needs to be tried. If the scale model does not work, it should also be thrown out. If an idea fails the market it should be thrown out. It’s a manager’s job to moderate the discussions which should involve a mix of optimists, pessimists, realists, skeptics, etc. They all have their place.
