With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

There’s an Internet cafĂ© in my neighborhood which also have a photocopier and I was there to have some photocopies. There was a small boy who was running the shop, he must be in class 8th or 9th at most. He had a great confidence and posture with him which reminded me that I was the exact opposite, (for those who don’t know me I was shy and introvert).

He was watching a YouTube video of a news coverup based on Shahrukh Khan and his son. It was one of the stupidest things on the Internet. Here is this guy who has access to the most powerful information bank of the world and he is watching the stupidest thing possible. If there would have been an award for watching the stupidest thing possible on the internet it would have gone to him. Well, I was not in a position of advising him so I left him after getting my photocopies wishing him all the best.

Leaving your child with an open Internet is like leaving your child with a loaded gun. If he doesn’t know how to use it and odds are that he would end up hurting somebody or himself.

Most of my relatives ask me if they should give access to the Internet to their children and my reply is “absolutely yes” all the time. With that said if you do not watch what your children are doing chances are that they would be watching another celebrity news coverup. But let me say this upfront that it’s not their fault because they don’t know the difference between right and wrong and it’s our responsibility as an adult to educate and help them make a better choice.
